    DESCRIPTION AND NOTES:

Learning from their hard won experience during the Dominion War, Starfleet commissioned several new types of fighter classes.
One of them was the Gauntlet Bomber. This new "fighters" mission is to penetrate heavily defended systems and take out a single target. General Martok of the IKDF brought the need for such a small vessel to light. Martoks attack upon the Monic IV shipyards with a single small Klingon vessel, proved that stealth, guile and a dash of luck could succeed without using a fleet.

The Gauntlet was designed from the outset to be as stealthy as possible, without breaking the Treaty of Algeron. It incorporates some of the many new technologies developed by Starfleet’s ASDB. A technology that was resurrected from a 20th century idea was the Adaptive Hull. This system consists of thousands of tiny hydraulic actuators under the top layer of the primary hull.
These actuators perform the function of moving the outer hull layers to vary the subspace resistance of the hull. Though this grants increase manoeuvrability, it does have some drawbacks. An adaptive hull requires a bio-neural computer to control it. Also only a type B shield grid may be installed. Finally, no additional armour can be mounted on the outer hull.

The missile based weapon package uses modified versions of Starfleet’s standard torpedo delivery system. The number one torpedo launcher functions in a similar way to standard systems. The centre missile system is optimised to fire all types of advanced torpedos and missiles. The final missile system can fire torpedoes or missiles upto 2.9 metres in length, such as the CEM ground attack missile. Inb adittion, the rear system can launch any of the ground or air launched weapons in Starfleets inventory.

Due to their size, a Gauntlet takes up twice the room aboard ship as a Starfleet Attack Fighter. Due to this, only two will be issued to certain Akira and El Dorado class carriers.

To date no Gauntlets have seen combat.

Outer hull may have a maximum resistance of 2

This system can only be installed on size 4 or less

Mk XI Combined Effect Munitions Missile

    Damage: See notes
    Range: 40,000-km onboard microfusion engine
Size: 228 cm long by 40-cm diameter
    Mass: 49.6 kg
    Blast Radius: 200m

This guided missile has a bomb bay that holds 120 bomblets. Upon reaching its target, it will fly over it target and drop these grenades, covering 200 square metres.
The bomblets have their settings changed before launch by the Bombardier. Each individual grenade can have a different setting if desired. The bomblets function in all ways as photon grenades (see p100 Price of Freedom).
After releasing its payload, the missile picks out a final target and flies into it. This impact does 20 points of damage plus 1 point per 1,000 km of fuel left.
Although this missile is primarily used within an atmosphere, it does have some effect against a space vessel. When all the bomblets are set to maximum, they do 40 damage to that shield. They also blind the targets sensors for one round .

For those who are intrested, The Gauntlet looked vey much like a B-1B lancer bomber. A B-1Bs dimentions were used for this, hence making it size 3.

I'm sorry if the writeup sucks a bit

You built a bomber? Different. I'd visualize a size 2 myself, but I guess a size 3 works, something like a heavy long-range bomber- B- ah...29? I think is the type.

Couple of things I have questions about, but I'm sure you'll answer them in the text write-up.

If you don't like the Adaptive Hull, simply drop it or replace the RCS with the Gravitc Slope Modulators.

Not to sound like I'm bashing your work or anything, but this thing won't fit on any issue carrier(other than the El Dorado I guess, since I have no clue what her hangar dimensions are) in Starfleet service.

The Akira's hangar doors only allow clearance for ships up to something like 30x7x3.5 meters(and then only barely, it's not really just a flaw with your bomber in particular, I've noted that the Peregrine's dimensions were rather inflated as well...)

Love the Idea, not so sure about the shield and size restrictions though. On the size thought, is this just a mark-1 version or a hard rule for the concept.

Ok, on the damage here, what scale are we talking- Starship (1:1), Vehicle (25:1), or Personal (50:1) (the Vehicle damage is out of the Dominion War Source-net-book). I like the concept though, and am really suprised someone hasn't thought up the thing sooner (after all, we have the same missile type in reality, cluster-bombs).

Ok, I'm seeing this clearly now.

None of us are Steve Long, all-in-all not bad...but I'm also not crunching the number either...you did check the math? For a Federation design it's a bit forward in the combat area, but that's personal to me, I could still see these little ships being build in limited numbers.

    Phoenix.

The CEM missiles are character scale. Ok, before you get your calculator out, ship damage would be in the region of 720 damage!!! I just picked a more realistic number.

As regards the size limit for tthe adaptive hull, I't more to restrict it to small vessels that need all the agility they can get to survive. From a Starfleet POW, they don't like the idea of major ship without any armour on their hulls. Of course what ever fits your vision is fine.

I think that this weapon would appeal to SF as you can blind , stun, kill or vapourize the target. It also sidesteps the thorny issue of SF ships conducting orbital bombardments (the lace panty folk at SFC don't like that)

    NobAkimoto,

I suppose SF widened to doors on the vessels that carry them. On the other hand, I see nothing wrong with changing the length, width etc to fit yor idea of it.

Looking it over I have noticed that I did not mention it has movable wings like a F-14 Tomcat or B-1B. The stated width with the wings retracted is the same as a real B1, just knock some off, to 18m maybe.

The B-1 can retract it's wings?!?! I never knew that!

Ok, with the missile damage...huh? you lost me there.

With the hull, Ok- that makes sense.

With the Militarieism (I know, not a real word) aspect, the CEM is a wonderful idea, the bomber/fighter was what I was talking about. Oh, and on the subject of orbital bombardment this equals fewer Federation casualties, the 'bleeding heart, lace panty folks' in the rear can bite me, or join the front themselves.

The Federation- "We don't start wars, we finish them" a quote I once heard from SFB.

    Phoenix.

The B1 does indeed has a sweep wing design. The wings are swept fully back when supersonic and stretched fully out on takoff etc. If you have ever seen an F-14 Tomcat take off from a carrier, the wings are stretched out for maximum lift.
I kept the wings due to the high amount ofatmospheric missions It would pull.

As for a CEM missiles starship damage, The maximum setting on a photon grenade is Heavy Disrupt G, doing 300 character damage. Using your ratio of 50 character damge equals 1 starship damage, thats 6 ship damage per grenade. Now multiply that 6 by 120 (he number of bomblets carried) =720 starship damage. I just picked 40 ship damage as a realistic figure due to the CEM missile is not really designed to be an anti ship missile.
Lets face it, 720 damage is up there with tricobalt devices.

One tactic I really like about the CEM is not all the bomblets have to have the same setting. As such (with a good roll) the bombadier could vapourise a group of tanks in the centre of a formation whilst stunning the troops surrounding those tanks.

Here is another missile for the Gauntlet

Tetryon Emission Supression Sensor (TESS) Missile
    Damage: 25 (Character)
    Range: 40,000-km onboard microfusion engine
Size: 176 cm long by 36-cm diameter
    Mass: 27.3 kg
    Search Radius: 300m
This guided missile carries 30 sensor guided submunitions. When released from high altitude over a target area, these submunitions home in on any tetryron emmissions. The submunitions have a sensor skill of 3 for detecting tetryon emmisions. If they fail to aquirre a target they harmlessly self destruct upon reaching 100 m above ground .
The submunitions have the equivilant protection of a class 3 cloak versus sensors, but may still be spotted visually.

This weapon was brought into sevice 9 months before the end of the Dominion War. They were designed to neutralise an enemies Transport inhibitors within the targeted area.

During the liberation of Betazed, over 200 of these missiles were were used to stunning effect. In some cases whole enemy formations were destroyed from Wu-Hsan missiles transporting themselves in secends after the Inhibitors were destroyed.

I one instance, it was noted by Starfleet that the submunitions were pulled off target by Romulan vessels decloaking near to their launch point.

Ok, understanding the math now, I didn't think about the 120 bomblets doing damage each. I was stuck in the one big boom concept...duh Phoenix. Here's a concept for you to try if you like, the idea my roommate and I have been using to determine the damage of Isotons vs. points of game damage, using a non-linier scail, the damage goes up by a point for every doubling of explosive/Isotons- apply this to the CEM, one bomblet does 6 points, then two = 7, four = 8, eight = 9, sixteen = 10...doing the math...one hundred twenty eight = 13 points of damage? (humph, that number came out smaller then I thought it would?).

B1-B...I was thinking something compleatly different...the B-# stealth thingie, the flying wing design.

"Tetryon Emission Supression Sensor (TESS) Missile"
Another great idea you have here...I'm now wracking my brain for something to compeat with...getting nothing here...I think your going to win by default.

Thats an interesting idea. Doing only 13 damge is low but may be more "realistic". I chose 40 damage because a dinky little 13 cm micro torp does 50 ship damage.

You were thinking of the B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber, the "Bat plane" Thats the flying wing. It would be rather difficult to fit that through the hangers doors.
